The Campaign (2012) - Jay Roach
I went to see this movie last night, and while I found it to be enjoyable to an extent, I didn’t find it all that funny. Starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifinakis, the film follows the campaign trial of two inept politicians running for Congress in North Carolina. The film was originally had the working names of “Dog Fight” and “Rivals” before settling on the final title. The movie was written by Shawn Harwell and Chris Henchy famous for their work on the television show “Eastbound and Down”. The director, Jay Roach, is most famous for his direction of the “Austin Powers” film series and “Meet the Parents”.
With a supporting cast of John Lithgow, Jason Sudekis, John Goodman, Dan Aykroyd, Jack Mcbrayer and Dylan McDermott, the casting and performances were excellent. However, the film fell short with it’s constant barrage of mean spirited humor and reliance on character acting which didn’t do it any good to set it apart from every other dime-a-dozen comedy released. While I wasn’t ever bored throughout the film, I ended walking out of the theater more depressed than uplifted.
I would recommend to wait for a home video release and try to find a free or inexpensive way to watch this movie. It’s not really worth going to the theaters to see.
